INEC orders arrest of vote buyers, sellers

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State has urged security agencies in the state to arrest anyone involved in vote-buying or selling in the forthcoming elections.

The electoral body described both the buyer and seller of votes during elections as criminals whose actions were threat to the electoral process.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State, Mr Rufus Akeju, stated this while receiving a delegation of Vote Not Fight campaign group in his office in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The REC said, “Voting-buying is a threat to our democracy. We have resolved that both the buyers and sellers are criminals and they must be arrested on election day.

“We must all get our democracy working by doing our best to have credible poll.  To have a good country, we must have a good government and to have a good government, people must elect good and credible leaders.”

While commending the group for their campaign against violence during elections, Akeju expressed optimism that the INEC would be fair to all parties.

The state coordinator of the group, Jonathan Obatola, said youths were determined to shun any form of violence before, during and after the elections.
