Police rescue 12 kidnap victims in Rivers

Twelve out of 14 kidnap victims in Rivers State, who had been held hostage by hoodlums for over four days, have regained their freedom.

The victims were occupants of a commercial bus that was attacked on Monday by kidnappers.

The gunmen were said to have killed the driver of the bus and two passengers occupying the front seat of the vehicle.

It was learnt that the victims’ captors had marched 14 passengers into the bush after the attack on Monday.

The killing and abduction took place on Rumuekpe-Ndele axis of East-West Road as the commercial bus was going to Port Harcourt in Rivers State from Warri in Delta State.

However, it was gathered that the police operatives from the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit had combed the Rumuekpe bush, where they engaged the kidnappers in a shootout.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, told our correspondent that one of the kidnappers was killed during the exchange of shootout.

He recalled that while six persons were rescued on Wednesday, another group of six persons, who were passengers in the ill-fated bus, regained their freedom on Thursday.

Omoni said, “I can confirm to you that 12 passengers have been rescued through the active efforts of our men during a joint operation.

“The kidnappers had engaged security operatives that were combing the bush of Rumuekpe and in the process; one of the kidnappers was fatally wounded (killed).

“While six of the victims were rescued on Wednesday, the remaining six regained their freedom on Thursday.”

He, however, pointed out that investigation was still ongoing with a view to ensuring the release of the remaining victims.
