INEC promises free, fair supplementary election in Ekiti

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Ekiti State has assured political parties, candidates and stakeholders that the House of Assembly supplementary election billed for March 23 in Ekiti East Constituency I will be free, fair, transparent and credible.

Major contenders in the election are Deputy Leader of Government Business in the state House of Assembly, Ojo-Ade Fajana of the Peoples Democratic Party, who is seeking re-election and Mr Juwa Adegbuyi of the All Progressives Congress.

The election is billed for five polling units in the constituency following the declaration of the March 9 House of Assembly poll as inconclusive. Already, results of the remaining 25 state constituencies had been declared and won by APC candidates.

Acting Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti, Dr Muslim Omoleke, said in Ado Ekiti on Sunday that INEC  decided to suspend elections in the polling units due to disruptions, thereby making the outcome inconclusive in line with its vow to be neutral and fair to all contenders in any election.

He said: “We are prepared for the election and we won’t deviate from the practice of fairness and neutrality to all political parties. We will meet the security agencies this week and brief them on how the conduct will look like so they can plan their own strategies on how to deliver a free, fair and credible election on Saturday.

“We have received materials from the headquarters and they are being kept in the Central Bank of Nigeria, the materials are under safe custody.

“We want to assure our voters that we won’t let them down. Let them come out en mass and vote. We assure that their votes will count.

“INEC  did not disappoint in the conduct of the presidential, national and state assemblies elections in Ekiti. This also will not be an exemption”, Omoleke stated.
